This middle-class Marathi girl and child actor hit it big in Rangeela. Since then, she's been struggling to perservere despite a string of flops and rumors of her involvement with a married director.
It is almost inevitable that when a director casts an actress in several of his films, their relationship will be questioned by the media. What distinguishes the Urmila - Ram Gopal Verma rumors is their intensity and specificity. The kudos for Urmila's portrayal of an obsessive lover in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya were accompanied by snickers over how closely the role supposedly fit her nature. The moment Verma cast Manisha Koirala in his next film, Company, the gossip columns supplied the explanation: allegedly, he'd broken off his relationship with Urmila after she slapped his wife during a heated confrontation.
The rumors do not please the actress, who has steadfastly maintained that her involvement with Verma is strictly professional. Certainly, however, the gossip has crippled her career; it's rumored that other directors fail to even think of her when considering actresses for a part, mistakenly assuming that to cast her would be to tread on Verma's toes.
That's a shame, because Urmila is a talented performer whose professionalism and dedication are as renowned as her supposed love life. Many co-stars, including the notoriously reticent Ajay Devgan, have attested to the pleasure of working with her. Surprisingly, though, Urmila never intended to make a career in films. "Yes, I always liked acting, but never ever thought it would be my profession. I wanted to study since my family has an academic background. I never went to producers' offices asking for work. Someone happened to suggest my name to N. Chandra and then to others, and that's how I got my earlier films.'' (Rediff, Sep. 1999)
Recently she's been in the news due to an alleged tiff with Sunil Shetty over her experience abroad while performing in his Popcorn Entertainment stage shows. As reported in Stardust Magazine, "One heard that she was not happy with the arrangements at a show by one of the promoters. And she made it clear to him in no uncertain terms. That resulted in a showdown between Urmila and the promoter. And looking for support, she didn't look beyond her colleague Sunil Shetty, which he didn't. That is why Urmila was miffed with him."
Sunil himself tells a somewhat different tale. "Urmila was upset because she didn't get her money on time. As an organiser, I have to cater to all the stars' needs. When all my boys are busy with work, I can't loll on a chair. For me, work is worship. It doesn't matter whether the luggage was Urmila's or someone else's." (Filmfare Online, 2002) Until Urmila clarifies the matter, it's all a mystery -- though if the press's track record is any indication, we doubt they'd listen to her anyway.
